Setting up Mr.Speech

Mr.Speech gives you three ways to work from anywhere on your computer: dictate into the app under your cursor, ask for a one-off AI transformation, or capture a meeting. Its desktop workspace then turns those recordings into editable transcripts, notes, plans, and project knowledge.

Install and open Mr.Speech

Install Mr.Speech, launch it, and complete the short setup. Sign in when you want cloud transcription, synchronization, or other account-backed services. On-device dictation and meeting transcription can be used without sending the recording to the cloud once the required local model is downloaded.

Allow the required permissions

Operating-system wording differs by platform. If insertion works in one app but not another, check that Mr.Speech still has accessibility permission and that the destination field accepts text.

Learn the floating control

The small Mr.Speech control stays available above other apps. Open its mode menu to choose one of three entries:

Make your first dictation

    Click inside any text field.

    Hold CtrlL on Windows, ⌥R on macOS, or CtrlR on Linux. If you changed the shortcut, use the one shown in Settings.

    Speak naturally. Release the shortcut when you finish.

    Mr.Speech transcribes, cleans up the wording, and inserts the result where your cursor was.

You can change dictation from hold-to-talk to tap-to-start/tap-to-stop in Settings. Dictionary terms, snippets, language, and formatting preferences are covered in “Make dictation yours.”

Try Ask Mr.Speech

    Select text in the app you are using, or simply place the cursor where new text should go.

    Press AltX on Windows/Linux or ⌃⌥X on macOS.

    Say or type an instruction such as “Make this concise,” “Explain this,” or “Write a friendly reply.”

    Review the result. Replace the selection, copy it, or dismiss it.

Ask Mr.Speech is the fast, one-request tool for the app under your cursor. Mr. AI is the deeper workspace assistant for notes, meetings, projects, and plans.

Record a meeting

Press AltM on Windows/Linux or ⌃⌥M on macOS. Choose Cloud or On-device, then choose Live or Post-transcription. Confirm the language and microphone, and start recording. The Meetings guide explains all four combinations and what is available during and after capture.

The three default shortcuts

These are defaults, not requirements. Change them in Settings if another application already uses the same combination. Older direct shortcuts for separate command modes are no longer part of the standard setup.

Understand the desktop workspace

History keeps your dictations. Notes is the long-form knowledge workspace. Plans contains Kanban boards and tasks. Meetings stores recordings, transcripts, summaries, and follow-up material. Projects group related meetings with their notes and rolling plan.

Inside the app, click the small Mr.Speech icon to open Mr. AI. The focus shown in its header tells you what it can currently use—for example a note, notebook, meeting, transcript, project, board, or card.

Open documentation when you need it

The blue documentation icon opens this documentation only when you click it. Mr.Speech does not automatically redirect new users to the old tutorial videos. The written guides are the current reference while the interface evolves.
